Americans with Disabilities Act Day

July 26, 2019

 

WHEREAS, today marks the 29th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which expanded access and opportunities for people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, to ensure the civil rights of citizens with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the District of Columbia Office of Disability Rights, the DC Commission on Persons with Disabilities, the Developmental Disabilities Council, the Department on Disability Services and other District of Columbia government agencies, have made substantial contributions to the quality of life for District residents who have disabilities; and

WHEREAS, all District government agencies and residents join together to affirm the principals of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities as set forth for the District of Columbia and is embodied in the ADA and the laws of the District of Columbia; and

WHEREAS, the District of Columbia government and residents are proud to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of our citizens with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Washington, DC is committed to helping eliminate barriers and discrimination against people with disabilities, to achieve greater social, economic and personal independence:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE MAYOR OF WASHINGTON, DC, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2019, in Washington, DC as “AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT DAY”.
